Fenty’s at it again! By this point I’m quite convinced that Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty is incapable of making a mistake. From shades to formulations, every release seems to be a hit, setting a high standard within the beauty industry. I am a huge fan of their latest move, focusing more on sheer, cream products, perfect for a more natural day to day look.
If you’ve read my blog post on the Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey (which I highly recommend), you know that sheer lipsticks are the bane of my existence. The products I want to love the most, but that never look quite right due to uneven and dark pigment in the lips. They always settle in weird ways, or look awful around the more grey toned areas of my lips. I always end up having to use a lip liner, which is not what I want when trying to achieve a more effortless look. But hey! You can’t find the perfect products without encountering some not so great formulations along the way.
When Fenty released the Slip Shine Sheer Shiny Lipsticks, I knew I had to try them out. The beauty community was flooded with reviews and raves, so, as Fenty is yet to ever let me down I took the plunge and purchased the shade that seemed to have the best chance of working for me, Retro Rose.
The Slip Shines are available in ten shades and retail for AU$35. According to Fenty, they are “Like your favorite pair of jeans, the everyday staple you can’t live without – ultra-comfortable, perfect for day or play, and lowkey sexy without even trying.” This nourishing lipstick is infused with pomegranate butter to condition the lips, making it super comfortable to wear.
The packaging diverts from the slim Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick bullet design, with a more sturdy presence reminiscent of the Match Stix. They are lightly scented which is lovely, but in no way overwhelming.
Retro rose is a very warm-toned, medium pink with a luminous finish. A fine shimmer is a nice addition to the shade, resulting in a lovely sheen which gives the impression of plumped lips, reducing lip lines. It appears very warm when swatched, however when applied, those warm undertones cancelled out any of the grey found naturally in my lips pigmentation, emphasising and adding to the natural pinks in my lips. I would highly recommend this shade if you have more neutral undertones such as myself and struggle with both warm and cool tones in sheer lipsticks.
FORMULA AND APPLICATION
The formula is creamy, lightweight and balmy, without being too slippery or waxy and tacky. Personally I hate lipsticks that feel tacky, which is why I typically gravitate towards mattes, however after a couple of hours of wear I had completely forgotten it was on and only remembered in shock when I saw a lip mark on my coffee mug. They are extremely comfortable and provide a decent amount of hydration. The Slip Shines do not settle into lip lines, rather brilliantly makes them look smoother. They provide sheer coverage, however can be built up if desired and wear well for around three hours before needing a quick touchup.
This lipstick formulation is kind of amazing. Retro Rose is a great nude for me and in conjunction with such a comfortable formula I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about this product. I adore the slight shimmer and the effect it has on the lips, plumping and evening out texture. For a sheer lipstick the lasting power is decent. If you have not already taken note of everyone raving about these, then you definitely should. I cannot wait to get my hands on a couple more shades; Cookies & Cocoa and Glazed are next in line.
