The Black Honey shade first made its debut in 1971 and instantly became the best-selling shade in US department stores. In 1981, ten years later, the Black Honey shade was launched in Clinique’s Almost Lipstick formula, a wash of colour that was designed to complement every lip tone and skin colour. A shade that could be an easy go-to for every woman, for any occasion. A perfect blend of red, blue, orange and yellow pigments, paired with the sheer base of the Almost Lipstick formulation has kept this icon around for decades and now it’s found its way into my collection, filling a longstanding void.
SHADE AND FORMULATION
Finding a sheer lipstick that works with my lips colouring has always been very difficult. The Almost Lipstick in Black Honey has achieved what none other has before. The perfect shade that does not clash, or sit oddly, rather perfectly enhancing, softly blending with my natural lip colour, resulting in juicy, beautifully defined lips. It is a moderately warm-toned, medium plum with a natural finish. The texture is soft, emollient and very easy to wear and apply. Despite this, it applies evenly and does not settle into lip lines. Reminiscent of a tinted lip balm, this lipstick lasts well for a couple of hours before needing a quick, mirror-free touch up. It can be worn lightly, or intensified through layering. Currently available on the Australian Clinique website for AU$40.
This is one of those magical shades that looks slightly different on everyone, adapting to different skin tones and undertones, making the perfect easy, daily lippie for everyone. There is a good reason that after decades, Clinique continues to manufacture the Almost Lipstick in the shade Black Honey as the only product left on counters in the formulation. It has become my absolute favourite shade to wear on a daily basis, whether with simple makeup, or as a finishing touch to a more dramatic look. If you haven’t given this shade a shot, I would highly recommend it.
